De Stijl

A Dutch art movement founded in Leiden in 1917, literally meaning “The Style.” De Stijl, also known as Neoplasticism, desired pure abstraction and universality through reduction of the unnecessary. Artists such as Piet Mondrian were focused on the fundamental principles of geometry and the straight line, along with strong use of asymmetry and use of primary colors. De Stijl was influenced by Cubist painting and would go on to influence Bauhaus and the International style of architecture, clothing, and interior design.
