Modern

A period of art from the early 1860s through the 1970s where tradition was
thrown aside for experimentation. The rapid changes in social and economic culture
brought on by the Industrial Revolution are responsible for the inception of modern
artistic concepts. Artists experimented with new ideas about materials and process as well
as the functions of art. Abstraction and lack of narrative are key parts of Modern art.
Artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, etc. were essential to the development
of Modern art.
